I can't see how this could be used instead of a RW. It's a decending device and the RW is a friction device that becomes nuetral when you ascend.

Any descender would still apply friction while ascending, making progress hard work and slow.

It's a nice looking descender though

I would think with the right rope (probably a 13mm) you'd get less friction than required to act as a true decender so ought to be on a par with the rope wrench. Certainly for decending it should work in a similar fashion. If it does create more friction than the RW might it be possible to change the hitch to a slightly less grippy setup. Thoughts?

The Kong Robot will certainly have too much friction on ascent, unless you use a footloop Prusik/ascender etc attached ABOVE the Robot to unload the climbing rope when you want to move the Robot up. If you were standing, for example, on a Pantin and tried to move the Robot up you wouldn't be able to budge it. This is how these devices (Robot, Petzl Reverso, Fig 8 etc) work for a Fireman's Belay - the rate of descent of the person hanging on the rope by the descender can be controlled by someone on the ground applying force to the bottom of the rope. With enough pulling on the bottom of the rope, the person descending can be brought to a standstill.

What do the rope wrench / kong robot do exactly, and how would they benefit your climbing? Thanks!!

The robot is a descender, nothing more.

The Rope Wrench is a friction device for use above a friction hitch on a single line (also the greatest arb invention ever!), so read the Rope Wrench Feedback thread.

Had a play about with a few different ways of creating friction today and its not too difficult to make something good for branch walking in and out. Ascending with a pantin seems to be the problem though. Rope wrench it is then :)
