L 200 crank pulley problem

my mate has a problem with the crank pulley,ie the pulley has slipped and moved inwards,no engine noises and hasnt caused any damage other than a broken belt, he has been quoted a £1000 to fix ?? anyone had similar problem and did it cost this much ?? seems a lot to me

Cambelt snapped oh dear internal damage highly likely .

not cam belt, aux belt,ie alternator etc

What belt? The garage can only guess at this stage, without opening her up and looking they don't know if any parts are damaged, Just because there is no noises doesnt mean no damage has been done.

 

If he is lucky it will be valve replacement and guides. Along with full gasket sets.

 

What happend when he was driving, or was he driving, did the engine lock up on him?

found aux belt on the ground,investigated and noticed pulley had shifted,engine is running fine

as far as i can tell the pulley only runs aux belts,not cam belt

Ok so it could. Be new belts and aux units. If the pulley has moved towards the engine could be thrust bearing gone. That means crank off and replace.

 

Hilux4x4 is a good site they can point in the right direction of what is involved in this.

If the bearings have failed this could be a bigger job if the crank has moved back.

Don't think they want to do the job in case the engine needs lifting out to get to the belt areas. Or the radiator out. The pulley is held in place by a bolt and a stop behind if this has worn out and allowed the pulley to move it can't be replaced and they have to go back to the crank area and pull that apart to get to it.

 

I would see another garage and see whatrice they give for it.

Did mine. Pulley falls apart where it's bonded. Threw cambelt out three teeth and snapped balance belts. Cost me about £250 in genuine Mitsibishi parts and a day to fix.
