I have three 16ft hawthorn tree's to reduce(as well as strip the ivy!! booo) and they are extremely compact and the branches are no thicker than one s finger. Would it be bad practise to hit these with the hedge trimmer ? or should i prune each branch with the pole pruners?:confused1:

There is a hedge near where I live that is hawthorn the farmer uses the flail on on arm on the tractor it smashes the hell out of it and it grows back really well, so if it will take that it should take a hedge cutter ok.

hedgecutters for as much as possible then get your pole pruners/loppers out to get the thicker stuff and tidy up any ragged cuts.

Or man up, get your shorts on and your secateurs out.:001_tt2::001_tt2:

Hawthorn - tuff tuff tuff, you can smash it half to death and it will just grow back stronger. Mashing it with hedgecutters should be absolutely fine, especially at this time of year, by the autumn it will be back stronger and thicker than ever.

But I agree with Kev, just man up and have at it in yer shorts with yer secateurs....
