I would say take the saw you are used to , if that's your mates , so when they ask you to spin off the clutch and mess with the power mate rim you will be familliar with it . If you got a really sharp chain he will most likely tap a few of the cutters with something to dull them off so you will have to sharpen up any ways. Husqvarna 346XP gets my vote etc etc . Good luck with your course .

For my assessment I had a new chain on my saw. The assessor gave me a screwed old 1 where the cutters were almost down to the witness mark. Its all experience. Enjoy it all. There is a load of information that you will just pick up and its fun.

I have read a few posts on here and will continue to do so, a fantastic site to say the least although I suspect I may well be throwing more questions your way in time!

 

So it's clearly between 2 saws for my first, I'll have a read up on both and make a decision closer to my course, or even after if I take my friends. I do like the idea of learning with my own kit though, I might see if I can go out and practice a few things with people already qualified before my course so I'm not a complete novice when it starts, that way I could buy a saw and have it in some sort of used condition.

 

Does anyone have any recommendations on any books that might prove useful for someone in my position? I'm determined to succeed at this and want to gain as much knowledge as I can before beginning. My course is due to start in Mach so I have a little time on my hands.

So after asking around and taking in opinions from here, I've settled for a 346 xp. I then managed to rack up a £900 shopping basket @ FR Jones & Sons to go with it. I've got my course booked, begins 27th Feb at Otley College, got a couple of books I'm eagerly awaiting delivery of from Amazon and can't wait to get started.

Don't get a 261 unless you want to keep replacing needle roller bearings ( see the thread ) Husqvarna all the way for ground saws .
