Whipping is mostly decorative, whip locking includes stitching so it is functional too.

 

Samson instructions are very informative on the subject.

Thanks for that Peter, I like the idea of whiplocking being functional as well as decorative, I'll have a nosey at Samsons instructions.

I may well be corrected but my understanding of the word 'whiplocking' is that it is a term for the combination of lock stitching and whipping.

 

Lockstitching is necessary as while the splice is unlikely to come loose under great loads, it is lighter loads that may cause it to loosen. The lockstitching holds everything in place. Whipping is a more decorative thing but for me, it covers up an protects the lockstitches, also, psychologically, if I know I've whipped it I know I've lockstitched it.
