Or Birch?? Betula pendula 'dalecarlica'

What was the fruit/bark like???

As I live only ten minutes from the spot where the 'Darlecarlica' originates from I can 100% say its NOT one. Ill go for Alnus glutinosa 'laciniata'. If it is a birch I would say it is some other type eg. 'crispa' which is the one thats usually gets mixed up with 'Darlecarlica'. The true one is back in certified production as of last year! Due to some mixup in the production in earlier years gardencenters been misled and been selling 'Crispa' and other cutleaf birches instead of the one found by Lineus on one of his many travels in Sweden.

I would like to correct last statement:blushing:...

Correct spelling and name is Betula pendula ’Dalecarlica’

The tree was found on a estate in Lilla Ornäs in the County of Dalarna (Dalecarlica is latin for Dalarna) by estate owner Hans Gustav Hjort 1767.

He wrote a letter to Carl von Lineus a year later and told him about his findings. Lineus asked him to sent the tree to him in Stockholm, luckily he didnt! H.G Hjort tried several times to reproduce the tree but failed.

Erik Lindgren, Director of the Royal AgricultureAcademy managed to, in 1878 gather material from the tree and bring it back with him to Stockholm and reproduce the tree. He planted som trees around his house where some of them are still alive.

The true varaity 'Dalecarlica* hasnt been in production for about 30 years.

The certified tree is avaliable as of last autumn the registred name in Sweden is Betula pendula ’Dalecarlica’ E ®.

The tree is sterile due to lack of pollen. A great tree for allergics!

Amongst 20 000 -25 000 cutleaf Birches in Sweden its reckoned only 150 -200 is of true origin!!!!

Two pics to help you identify the tree. :001_smile:
