Stumpgrinder,do you think this railway is a good idea?do the pros outweigh the cons?just intrested.cheers

Hi John,

Yes I do, living out here I use the high speed rail to go to Bordeaux and Paris and they are brilliant,(ooooh how cosmopolitan!) cutting journey times in half compared to cars, a high speed link between the major cities in England is ime essential to growth.

Of course i love the countryside and if it was my land I might feel differently, But some sacrifices have to be made and omelettes and eggs spring to mind.

I see your point,if we had comparble rail fare s with much of Europe then it might well benefit people, but fares being what they are i just cant see people suddenly jumping on it and using their cars less,i may be wrong though.

Sorry, but i strongly disagree (and I dont often do that) with the idea of the HS2 and what people are saying regarding bringing money into the economy and progress, of course it will short term while the project is on and it'll provide jobs, but only for the extent of the building stage, then what? guess another pointless project will be invented at the cost of the countryside and so it goes on. Im all up for stuff to create employment but this just seems like the whole thing hasn't even been thought out properly (totally pointless). And how on earth can you call the destruction of 26(?) ancient woodlands progress, flattening a couple of council estates might be more like it.

just google.. david cameron speaking about HS2... says it all.... northern nlabour mp's are ones who choose the route when in power so as to see the chilterns countryside devestated...
