I've not fully tested after losing the breather, but I noticed some fuel coming out due to it being left fully fuelled in warm sunshine... so I guess its breathing now! When in use the vacuum should prevent leakage I guess. I'll give it some work and report back.

Cheers

the feed pipe to the carb. It then proceeded to start on full choke and stall, restarting on 2/3rds choke

The  carb has very  fine filter and a lot of starting and running problems come from this filter being blocked or partially blocked and having to run on choke is a good indication, provided the saw was tuned and running normally before. But we must not forget the fuel tank filter, which is easy to access. In some tank filters there is a small block of filter substance that, if not replaced, decomposes and works it's way through to the the fine carbureter filter and totally blocks the filter, hence the aforementioned problems. This happens with old saws that have not had the fuel tank filter renewed.  We also must remember the fuel tank vent screw, if this is over tight, causes a vacuum and fuel starvation.

To access the carbureter, remember the whole of the fuel tank and start plate are removed as one assembly, as the start plate assembly forms part of the fuel tank and cannot be separated with out removing as one assembly. Then, if for some reason you wish to separate, access is gained to two securing bolts.   Note:  If you use compressed air to blow out your you stripped down carbureter, with flow valve removed , becautious of blowing out the very fine carb filter. Locate the filer, which can be difficult if it is blocked up, before blowing out the carbureter . Good Luck.

There is a very useful guy in Greece which has a great range of chainsaw parts and equipment, and knowledge, close to Athens, Google   DLA ENGINE PARTS or www.dlastore.com  and you will find his contact,  if that's any help for you.

Might be a bit late, but the issue with mine was the pulse pipe, the rubber hose that runs from the crankcase to the carburetor adapter. The ends had flared and let it gulp air. Easy, cheap fix, just need to pull the whole machine apart yo get at it.
