Husky 455 Rancher starting problems

Hi everyone, hope you had (or are still having) a good Xmas break. I'm hoping that someone can help me to fix my Rancher, cuz I don't want to have to pay to get it fixed if I can possibly help it!

 

My 455 won't start.

 

When I pull the starter cord, it makes a lower-pitched sound than normal, and the decompression button pops up on virtually every pull without the engine turning over.

 

I've checked all of the (to me) obvious things, like fuel (correct mixture), fuel filter, air filter, spark plug renewed. The bar is correctly fitted and the chain tensioned properly. Exhaust looks fine.

 

I last used the machine a couple of weeks ago for some light de-limbing. On that occasion it started fine, but cut out after about 4 minutes, and I've not been able to start it since.

 

Fingers crossed that someone out there will be able to help...

Haven't had any experience with many other saws, but have loved the 455, and this is the first time it has let me down in 4 years.

The "lower pitched than normal" must be the clue.

I don't know these saws at all but the first place I'd be looking would be the lever mechanisms for the choke etc. Is is possible one of the rods has popped of or got bent somehow and it's now on choke permanently?

what size bar have you got on it, what work you doing with it.

 

I'd be using it with 18" bar and personal cutting up.

Thanks, but I think the choke is OK - the mechanism looks and feels exactly as it should...

I use it for felling and cutting firewood, with 15 and 18 inch bars.

The easy way to check would be to see if it still sounds different with the choke on/off like it should?

There's no difference in the sound made whether the choke is in or out... keep sending your suggestions though, everyone.
