Splicing Marlow Aeris

Any one any experience if this? It's 24 strand but kernmantle core so treat it like a 16 strand splice but with a 5-4-5-4-5-4... Taper??

 

Just got it today for my new lanyard and had hoped to get it done tonight!

Yeah i'm certain it's possible, Marlow even have on their www. Its a spliceable rope. Their splice instructions arent great to identify the type of rope or splice necessary though.

 

Probably a better way of explaining it is the cover is 24 strand but the core isn't braided and is like that in a 16 strand rope.

never seen the rope but if its a true kernmantle then use the Heavy Duty Kernmantle splice by new england

how many of those splices have you done bro? Look pretty interesting, can you modify it so you can bury the cover so you done have to whip it to the side?

Looks an interesting splice and like craig I'd be interested to see if you can bury the cover...?

 

The rope construction looks about right, is this still do-able with a wire fid or would a push did be easier??

I sent Paul at Marlow a email asking about the splice for this rope.

 

Here is his reply.

 

The splice is similar to the one that’s been used in Abseil ropes for many years. It’s not the same as the splices used on doublebraid or the cover dependent climbing ropes like Gecko and XTC.

 

 

 

Essentially the way it’s formed is to extract the cores at the eye then put them back into the cover passing them around the eye in the opposite direction to the cover, the tapered cores are then buried in the standing part under the cover. Finally the (tapered) cover is also buried alongside the cores.

 

 

 

We wouldn’t normally recommend safety critical ropes like this are spliced by users and so unfortunately don’t have instructions that I can send out, I only have our internal QA documents for this process.

yeah wire fid is the way to go. you can definetly taper and bury the cover but im not sure how much this affects the strength of the splice-i imagine its negligible. The important thing is to make sure the core strands dont crosssover or twist-its a pretty ugly splice.

Great input guys thank you and the email from marlow is far beyond what I was hoping for.

 

Does look like a tricky one but certainly doable, what the email describes sounds like the New England heavy duty kernmantle eye splice up until the cover bury, can't see how you'd get two lots of core and 1 lot of cover all sitting together inside the final cover though??

 

My current lanyard bugged me more than normal today knowing I had this on my table waiting!
