Downed Oak Branches

We had some winds here a few months ago and part of an old oak that stands alongside a public right of way/bridle path fell on to the right of way. It has been chopped into chunks and longish branches has just been thrown onto the grassy/weed filled side of the path. The branches look very dry and easily snap showing dry wood.

Just wondering.....

1. is it ok to pick the discarded wood up and bring home as its on the side of a right of way

2. how long would we need to leave it before burning, it already looks very dry

All land belongs to someone, so does the wood that lays on it, but you may find that the landowner is happy for you to tidy it up for him/her.

If its on my farm, the its just 'cos I havent got there yet to pick it up and stick it in next years log pile.

2. The longer the better, if it was a dead branch it will have a lower moisture content, try a log, if there is any hissing when it starts to burn then leave it a year.
