New saw to trial

Hi all.

After my recent thread i have decided to trial a Mitox 5020.

Not a pro saw but a firewood saw plus.

Instead of the 20 inch as standard, i specced an 18'' bar.

I was going for the 62cc model i picked the smaller one due to weight and a more suitable for my needs.

The saw is 3hp with a max revs of 10000 so no screamer.

Oregon bar and chain. Walbro carb and Japanese electrics.

Comes with 2 year home user warranty. Price £199

For its size of engine its heavy. Hopfully lower revving and heavier than normal will make it reliable.

Initial impressions are reasonable plastics and build. A tad heavy. Well balanced.

Picked it up late today so no time to try as yet.

Will give it a run out tomoz.

Will keep you informed.

My results will be based against similar sized saws.

HUSKY 353, 346XP and my first saw 350 the latter the most similar.

Watch this space.

Will be interested to see the results in how it cuts - 10,000 rpm is a very slow reving saw, even the very big saws (880, 395) usually push 12,000 - 12,500 max revs and the 346XP is limited to 14,100 - more revs means faster chain speed means faster cutting.

There is more to a saw than fast chain speed - keep us all informed though, at £200, I would have purchased a second hand 350 Husky and had £50 change:thumbup: my choice though!!

I look for weight, balance, power and quality in build - the 345, 350, 346 etc all have these IMO. Good residual prices as well!

Perhaps i should compare it to a Husky 240 then, similar money.

2hp, max power at 9000 revs.

Trouble is i dont have any experience of this saw. Even the Husky 353 is £400 squid.

Just trying to give an informed opinion. To see if the mitox is good value for money in comparison.

As for buying a used Husky 350 for £150, well i cant find one. Teh other thing is unless you know the saw or has a warranty left, you could be buying trouble. If the mitox goes pop it goes back to the local dealer. Parts available within 24 hours.

2 year warranty.

At £200 new that works out at £2 a week over 2 years with change to spare. Less than a pint of beer a week.

I admire your self confidence!

After asking everyone what they thought of the Mitox saw in this thread http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/chainsaws/35237-mitox-chainsaws.html and getting consistent advice not to buy it, you go ahead and buys one anyway. Credit for that.

And on paper, the Mitox is very good value for money. But as everyone knows, paper specs don't mean much in the real world, where actual power, weight, antivibration, longevity and spares availability (also in two years time) matter.

I look forward to hearing about the Mitox saw when you've actually put the cain to the wood. So far, it's all paper-spec talk.

Well said - I hope thet the saw turns out well and we are proved wrong but my experience on a couple of Chinese Zomax saws put me right off these cheap imports.

IMO, you get to an age where you know you should pay that bit extra and do so and end up with the satisfaction of a good product!

My example of a 350 for £150 was second hand - sold one on here for that a year ago - only a couple of years old!

Hi spud. The market is changing rapidly.

Check eblog to see the silly amounts of money people are paying for 20 year old stihls. They have had the guts tbrashed out of them

Great, long lived saws that have paid for themselves.

Surely not worth the money they get. A free market though.

I personally would not want one.

If i wanted a new 346, 357, 360xp i could luckily raise the funds.

I am just the guinea pig trialing a saw for the novice who prefers to have a new saw at a low price with back up.

Even the venerable 350 Huskies are making good dosh nowadays. Check for youself on the bay.

May get a chance to give the zaw a spin today. Otherwise Monday.

Will keep you all informed.
