LOGS TO BURN (a piece of history)

a 64 year old friend of mine and colleague gave me a 12" plank of lime with the following poem inscribed on it. The piece of wood has such a sentimental value to it that I am gonna treasure it and hopefully pass it on a young arb head when I'm grey and old. I promised I wouldnt broadcast the full story of how my friend came to own this plank as it is personal to his heart, but I was given permission to post the Poem.

Here goes:

Logs to Burn

Beechwood fires burn bright and clear,

If the logs are kept a year,

Store your beech for christmastide

with new-cut holly laid beside.

Chestnuts only good, they say

If for years tis stored away;

Birch and Fir wood burn too fast

Blaze too bright and do not last

Flames from Larch will shoot up high

Dangerously the sparks will fly.

"But Ashwood green and Ashwood brown

are fit for a queen with a golden crown"

Oaken logs, if dry and old

Keep away the winters cold

Poplar gives a bitter smoke

Fills your eyes and makes you choke

Elm-wood burns like churchyard mould

E'en the very flames are cold.

Hawthorn bakes the sweetest bread -

So it is in Ireland said:

Applewood will scent the room

Pear-wood smells like flowers in bloom

"But Ashwood wet and Ashwood dry

a King may warm his slippers by."

I did think it maybe a fairly common verse but wanted to share it with those that hadnt heard it. and the stroy behind the version I have been given on the plank of Lime is similar to the scenn in Pulp Fiction about Butch's dads watch only it never travelled internally in a human. hahahaha thats all Im saying.
