Take care if you are climbing this one as all the trees i have taken down with lots of woodpecker holes have been really rotten all the way through its like they know its rotten and decayed and that's where all the insects are . Just my two pence worth dont know this is all ways the case.:001_smile:

Andrew,

:thumbup1: or other insect larvae. Woodpeckers only create one or two holes for nesting (see : the arborists little helper).

Andrew, Woodpeckers will create many holes for harvesting insects in trees that are dead and dieing. Do take care like woodchopper said if you are going to do any climbing for removal of said tree. Looking forward to the pics.

four w pecker holes ... they looked to all be in use ... 3 or more w pecker holes in

All used as nesting holes/hollows by the same pair of woodpeckers at the same time or are some taken by other birds (nuthatch), bats, squirrels or tree marten ?

Inspected a lime in a park in scarborough a couple of years ago and the entire tree was covered in lines of shallow holes. Spoke to a local ornithologist about it who was very exited! now the local twitchers monitor the tree - apparently its a woodpecker behaviour seldom found in the uk, although it is documented in US and in mainland europe by some woodpecker species.
