Recommended Posts

parked in a grounds of a localish hospital yesterday and spotted a tree and thought whats that?

large tree with masses of leaves, very dark green[looks evergreen]

the leaves remind me of holly, but not so prickly, they look like holly and the texture is the same,as above very dark green, but very light under, there are a slight few spikes on the ends of leaves

is it a kind of holly:001_huh:

its not ilex latifolia - Tarajo, the leaves aren't big enough

A few questions

What was the bark like?

What are the buds like?

What is the bud arrangement on the stem?

Do the leaves give off a distinctive smell when crushed?

Have you got any more pics or pics less blurry?

I'll do my best to ID it for you:biggrin:

At the moment possible suspects could be

Ilex dipyrena - Himalayan Holly

Ilex x beanii - A cross between the Himalayan and our own native holly

It could even be a Prunus caroliniana but i doubt it if you say its got berries like Holly

It could be Quercus ilex (Holm Oak) as the leaves do have the 'spikes' when immature. Look for acorns - they will be tiny so look carefully.

Good call:thumbup:

but is has been mentioned about berries which the Holm Oak does not have
