Land rover V8 lpg conversion?

Hi Experts,

How easy would it be to convert a 3.5V8 to lpg, and how much would it cost?:confused1:

I know it may shorten the longevity of the engine a tad but would like one for near base and short trips so not that relevant?. There's all those "snatch" lr's sitting in Colsterworth, and they seem a good start for building up a tough vehicle but they're all fitted with the 3.5 V8.

Thanks, Daniel

Ps, the wife/camp commander keeps my wallet so suggestions of "just get a £6K 130" shall be laughingly ignored.:001_smile:

Pretty sure LPG kits are around the £2k mark.

My VW lt35 is a petrol LPG conversion, i find that its a bit less economical on gas but of course gas is cheaper. Thing is gas isnt all that cheap now compared to what it once was, I am paying 93.9p per litre here on the isle of man, think petrols up round the 1.38 mark at the mo.

So what im trying to say is it will now take you longer to recover the money spent on a conversion kit than it once did.

One of the people i work for has a V8 converted to lpg. When it is working it works well. However is seams to spend alot of time in the garage to keep it working. My landy machanic say the V8 enginne does not take to the conversion very well, and dreads the regular phone calls from the owner of the above landy because of the difficulty in solving the conversion problems.

a conversion will cost about 1200 - 2500 depending on tank options and single point or multipoint type. my 3.9 disco has a basic single point system and 80 litre tank (holds less) in the boot. Cost 1100 four years ago, don't think installation costs have risen too much, possibly even decreased since. Gas here ranges from 67p to 79p per litre. The tank gives me about160 miles range with usual town driving.

about 14mpg I guess on gas, petrol gave about 17mpg. Have not run on petrol at all since I blocked the fuel lines about two years ago and haven't got round to sorting it out yet :blushing: but then have not found it a problem.

Local LR breaker reckons he sees a lot of problems from poorly fitted kits so if you get a conversion make sure it's from somebody reputable. Only problem mines had is a dodgy electrical connection in 40000 miles. (oh, the blocked fuel lines was due to not keeping enough petrol in the tank which I suppose is a related problem, but that was my fault)

slightly less power on gas, but no real issue.

I'd have one converted again, sure you'll find sceptics though!

I'd fit it myself, if she says I'm allowed.

My dad had a couple af range rover's on lpg recently, but both 3.9's (and both died horrible rattly deaths) so I wondered if there's much differnce between the 3.5 and the 3.9?

It would not be a new kit, too expensive especially if vehicles like these cost less than just a conversion. My time is quite cheap, a lot cheaper than the mech's time anyway. I also enjoy mucking about with cars and such but have no experience with LR's so...
