do you also know what causes the odd bulbous growths on some planes? is it a high water table, and something like a possible neumataphore?

 

No, I can't answer that question. I don't think, however, that they are fungal based.

Is the little bulge not a sphiroblast? (sp?) seem to see them on beech.

 

I was half right with the fungi :) The polyporus confused me a little though. The form was right but it's 'markings' weren't!

The polypores are a huge group, even I get them wrong sometimes, last week i thought i found tuberaster, but as gerrit pointed out it didnt fit and my gut said so but being lazy i didnt look further into it.:blushing:

This type of small bulbous growth sometimes develops into a bark canker caused by Nectria ditissima ...

 

... or into bark and cambium necrosis causing deformation of large zones of the trunk with massive cankers as a result.
