i am not to sure about there felling cuts either, the mouth the cuts seems very closed. do they not want the fell to be controlled..not jump of the stump!

Whats now becoming interesting to me, is that when that was filmed, a year or so ago, the timber industry was in decline due to the lack of building works, and now the very same pattern is happening here. Harvesting teams are now available to do the smaller jobs that wouldnt have been viable a while back. I heard yesterday that the largest UK timber processing plant has shut its doors for the time being.

On axe men, why do they cut the stump so high? Last night, I saw one cut at about 2-3' high, then he trimmed the stump down to about 6", leaving it to roll down the hill! Someone told me it's a hangover from the old days, when they were only paid for timber above the root flare..hence the need for spring boards etc. Is that right?

I wondered if that was the way they'd done it since the time of axes and cross-cuts, and no-one ever thought to go lower now they have powered saws.

just a guess, but if significant root flares are left on, stacking the poles might become a wee bit difficult for them? looks like theyre wanting nice straight poles.

following on from that guess, with a 100ft+ tree, would the time of stripping the trees of the flares first, be un-costeffective as opposed to loosing a couple of foot of timber???

watched it this morning, having worked n forestry n the UK for last 20 years, they look years behind us machinery wise, they were skylining ground that can be easily done by the modern harvester and forwarder.
