Hi!

I am just thinking of starting to sell logs. I have access to a plentiful supply of ash, sycamore and oak which has been cut in the last 2 years and stacked. Ive been offered it at £35 m3. Is this a good price? Is it possible to make any money if i buy it in at that price, need to account for moving it from wood to home, chopping, then delivering it. Not sure how much to charge as prices vary so much!! Any guidance much appreciated!

Regards Jim

Welcome to the forum Jim.

Where abouts are you as price tends to vary due to locality more than anything else?

My logs are selling at £105/cubic metre of loose logs

Good luck any way

hello jim, as Dave says, depnds your local prices. round here mixed hardwood finished firewood average price ~£65-70 per 1m3 loose load delivered. some guys say £100/m3, guess it depends. so is that £35 per m3 of solid wood? i wonder what the measure is and how straight grained it is? if it's straightish wood 8-12" diameter, and for a solid measure m3, that's a fair price and gives you room to work. prices for better grade cordwood seem to be nearer £50 per green tonne(m3). all the best.

Thankyou for the replies! Its in 3 ft lengths approx 8" diameter. Spoke to someone who came into work today who said he charges £70 for a pickup back load. If i can make a few quid then ill give it a go. My dad is a self employed gardener and gets asked about logs on a regular basis so will start supplying to his customers. How much would approx 30 m3 of ash be worth?

sounds like you have 30 pickup truck loads of logs? and you're gonna pay 35quid per truck load, then you're gonna saw and split them and sell em on at 70. so if you manage to drive there in morn, saw split and load one truck and go deliver it, then go back arvo and do another, you'll have 70 less your truck and saw fuel, and less some tooth wear on yer chain etc etc. don't sound bad i guess. so long as you don't have to add any extra handling, like logs back to yard and unload, then saw split and throw in shed, then throw on truck next tuesday...

but 30 x 1m3 pickup truck loads is a loose measure, is 30m3 loose. 30m3 solid measure (dry) ends up more like 60m3 loose when split. so it makes a big difference which way it's been measured!

anyway, who does it for the money!?

Don't do it for any less than £100 a cube, i'm doing half cube bags at £65 a time, if they take 2 bags i do them for £120, I'ts HARD graft don't do it for nowt.

quite right! start out where you mean to carry on. coz we've been cheap before, it's harder to get to where it should be. eggs, you should buy all ours and sell it on! that'd show 'em!

it is definately hard graft.

The initial stack ive been offered will be a bit of an arse to extract but i can borrow a large twin axle tipping trailer and ive got a defender so should manage it. As long as it remains dry for a bit. Id need to move the lot back to our yard first. The other stacks are easier to get to but would still remove it all to yard. I was thinking of doing the manageable bags, think they are 3ftx2ft? How much would they be knocked out for? Dont want to undersell but likewise dont want to be overpriced and stuck with logs i cant sell! Im using 500 quid of our wedding savings for next year to try and make a bit extra. Have done cars and landy work in the past but i want to try something different. Im in Leicestershire so nice and central. Please keep the words of advice coming!! Any vehicle/machinery assistance please ask.

Regards Jim

I think i read another thread that said you were in Shorpshire, i think the haulage would kill it ? i went and looked at a guy locally that was selling bulk bags cheap but the quality was rubbish!!!

what sort of money would you want ?

Is the wood seasoned ?

If so we MAY be able to have a deal.

Leicestershire. Going to discuss things further tomorrow. It's good quality wood and loads of it!! Just need to work out if it's viable and can make back the investment I'm borrowing from the wedding fund! If I goes wrong I'm a dead man!!
