I suppose you suggest a relationship between Witches' Butter (Fuligo septica) and dog urin/excrements, but there is no direct association, because myxomycetes "graze" on whatever substrate rich of bacteria, fungal tissue (spores) and plant debris.

It's a Cortinarius species from the C. flexipes s.l. complex :

- if it smells like Pelargonium, it may be C. paleaceus,

- if it has no distinct smell and is an ectomycorrhizal symbiont of Betula, it may be C. hemitrichus and

- if it has no smell and is associated with Picea it may be C. pilatii.

 

I never smelt it but it was found in proper Chantrellus tuberosum huntinggrounds...

 

Will have a proper sniff next time I come across it!

1. I thought your first photo was on Betula.

2. Yes, it did, just like in photo 2 from Bavaria/Germany.

I've seen it on Fagus (Benelux, Germany), on Betula (Benelux : photo 1), on Picea (Benelux, Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic), on Abies (Bavaria/Germany, Sumava/Czech Republic), on Acer (Poland, Austria) and on Prunus (Sweden, Bavaria/Germany : photo 2).

Hm... it does look like a birch... but I think it was on aspen (?) but I might remeber it incorrectly.

Cherry...I'll have to go back and have a second look at that little fella and se if there are anymore fb:s!
