Are logs a sideline or a full time business ?

I have just been reading another thread about gardeners making ends meet in winter and some people suggest doing logs to tide them over. I see or hope that my firewood business will be able to stand on its own as a very profitable business. I know that many people will say that it depends on your expectations of income but to be a proper business it has got to continue to grow. How does everyone else view their firewood business .. bit of money on the side or a stand alone business???

For me its a side line to being a builder, but when its raining or freezing cold u cant work outside or lay bricks. So I use the firewood as a fill in job. I usually just buy in the cord and process it when we get the chance. It was actually another builder who got me into it as he and his dad have been doing firewood for over 30 years.

As with any business you only get out what u put in !!

I think a large percentage of log suppliers do it as a side line, thats one of the main problems, they are just making a little extra cash, so tend to be very cheap.

And unprofessional... I have literally never had another log supplier answer the phone when I have rung to compare prices :sneaky2: A tree surgeon said to me recently (a member on here) that not many people are doing firewood as a fully fledged business like I am (he worded it a little more complimentary but modesty forbids :blushing:)

I know of 1 full log business in my area, and I believe he does very well, my thougts are can you make a return doing it on the side, as when i sell logs from my arisings it basically covers costs.......not profit, but thats because i'm not set up to process on a large scale, and I only sell to existing clients really.......

Is answering the phone a sign of professionalism??

Did they have an answer phone?? Just leave a message and they will get back to you.

The logs being dry would be my test of their professionalism.

PS, is ring other firms under false pretense very professional??:sneaky2:

If you dont grow and move with the market you stagnate and die ... WOOLWORTHS

Not true.

Woolworth tried moving with the times and got into a new business model that involved selling the property off and renting it back.

It was this new innovation that caused their down fall, if they had stuck to the old tried and tested model maybe they would still be trading.
