The Arb magazine article- Jeremy Barrell

Recommended Posts

I have just read an article By J. Barrell in "the arb magazine" that we get as AA members and have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it and got a lot from it.

Has anyone else seen it and got any views on the subject- Expert witness?

As this is an area I am keen to go into in years to come I would welcome any discussion on this article and any experiences etc anyone may have in this area.

Was interesting reading the details of the recent case regarding the national trust with Dr Lonsdale and Forbes laird discussing the issues.

I find this a rather interesting and attractive area of our business.:thumbup1:

Not arb but my father inlaw was asked to be an expert witness by the crown in his industry, the rewards are substanial but thay ripped his knowledge to bits and questioned his experiance to be sure of his expert status. it sounds like a a great job but for my opinion when it comes to it your words could condem a man in my fathers case there was no fatalities just a multi million pound refinery destroyed and subsequint compensation, My father inlaw spent about two months on the verge of a brakedown before the case due to the pressures he felt to compile eveidence etc.

This may sound odd, but that pressure inspires me!

It is a serious business indeed, and i am working always to be as expert as one can be in a developing science which is still more art than science.

I can imagine the stress involved in a situation where peoples whole careers/business/financial ruin is potentially on the rack, but is that not what its all about, being true and revealing the FACTS so that a FAIR judgement is made as opposed to not getting involved and seeing an unfair one made?

Not only that, but as jeremy barrell put it, "U.K tree consultancy is not in good shape"

The one thing that really inspired me was that the best witness combines both decades of experience with qualifications, so my path, is right, My 24 + years are going to serve me well, as is the fact this is more than a job to me, it is my way of life. get a degree under my belt and i will be well on my way:thumbup:

I thrive on mental challenges and this is the pinnacle of the challenges within our industry, along with the pursuit of adding new knowledge (PHD route)

I am driven out into the woods everyday for two reasons, one is the passion, the other is to document and record it all, everything i can see and find, I have gained much and learnt things and gained experiences you just cant buy or train for. Be a shamefull waste to not use that to its full capacity:001_smile:

The article gave me a much needed boost, that i am on the right track, and working on the right lines, it has given me the boost I needed to keep at it and remain at it, that thing I do.:thumbup1:
