I agree with Fungus (Gerrit) a very poorly union, forced apart by bark to bark contact ABOVE the union not included within the union, as growth (secondary thickening) continued the union was year on year forced open, allowing ingress of water (possibly anaerobic conditions hence the dark wood) and this could have/should have been picked up by a decent surveyor (in my opinion)

well we did an aerial inspection of all the other chestnuts on the park and did some minor work but nothing major. shame it took this to prompt that but at the end of the day nobody was hurt. i think after this aerial inspections will now be funded! after all, like i said to them, what price do you put on safety!

binoculars FIRST, expensive lifts after, its about what is REASONABLE, not what is unreasonable (yearly platform inspections.

if that became the norm trees would become considered an overly expensive burden, with dire consequences.

Not suggesting it wasnt the right thing to do in THIS case, but lets just ensure we remain realistic and do only what IS REASONABLE:thumbup1:

a good surveyor would have picked up the need for a closer look doing a basic VTA of the site, if a basic VTA is done annualy it will cost less than the rental of a platform to inspect all the trees, REASONABLE.

we can all find defects if we go beyond the call of duty:001_rolleyes:
