Its hard to say at this stage whats going on, if i was being pinned down and some toad was twisting my arm i would say armillaria, but dont panic!

 

There is a heck of a lot of incremntal growth (see arrows on lighter strips between bark fissures) which shows high vitality/vigor and rapid adaption to the decay that is obviously occurring :thumbup1:

thats what i thought first matty but the little hole round the back of the tree started me thinking looks to me like a little bug eatin its way in the tree i but a stick in the hole to see how deep in the tree it when (about 5 inch)

 

Can you upload pictures of its crown at the affected side of the tree ? And the "rot" in the wound doesn't look like the type of (white) rot caused by Armillaria to me.
