Polyporus squamosus and Auricularia auricula-judae?

From my perspective within the realm of Open Space Tree Management, I would (theoretically based on photos & not a site inspection) proscribe a reduction (of this tree with those specific fungi species) and then place the tree on to an annual inspection regime, then re-manage as appropriate.

But I'm imagining that in the private spectrum that would possibly not be feasable.

Guess it depends on the clients ability to enter into a regular inspection programme & future on going works.

good call on the fungi ...

... of which P. squamosus is a primary necrotrophic parasite, causing a fast developing deep white rot of the central wood in most diffuse porous trees and H. auricula-judae - except in Sambucus - is a secondary saprotrophic species causing superficial white rot of dead wood (of sawcuts).

There's been debate on Shigo's four walls since CODIT was first put forward as a model/idea.

But its the best we've got at the moment, until someone else comes up with a better explanation/model as to what happens when trees are wounded then I'll be using CODIT to explain compartmentalisation to my clients.

I was just pointing out (for information) that this is a debatable subject, iether way, they aften prove ineffective against many fungi (australe for instance) so barriers existence or not is less important than tree vitality which enables a tree to compensate and or produce antifungal substance/chemicals.
