I'd ring him, I've often been asked to quote on jobs very close to or on some of my mates patches and have allways rang them out of courtesey we've even discussed pricing in the past if one wants it more than the other!

I mean at the end of the day the job is mine and there's no way I'll feel bad about legitamately getting it, and there's also no way I'll be thinking about not taking it. We all need to put food on the table. It's just I rather do things the right way.

And at the end of the day, its your conscience. I'd look at things from the other side, ie if the boot was on the other foot, and make that call.

Thinking of the "patch" comment, years ago I was working for a company, and the boss was on site, and we were discussing work with the client. We had quite a professional approach to the job, all the kit, shirts and so on. In the area, we heard saws and a chipper firing up, and in front of the client, boss said "whos that on my patch?" Client says to us "thats the least professional comment I have ever heard in my life!" I always think of that if I hear someone else working nearby.
