Hodge reading your post again about not getting arbs jobs , my local council have been cutting tree's down left right and centre and its all contractors doing the work not council ops ,but the point is they throw all the wood into chippers and leave it in the shrubbery's as mulch !!!! I actually asked if i could have it they said no, i then asked if what if i paid you for it reply was the same . If councils are strapped for cash and they are all wanging trees down due to elf and safety they could earn themselves revenue by selling the wood on to people like yourselves who then process it and sell it on . It broke my heart watching them chipping an avenue of mature horse chestnut .It would of kept me in wood for the rest of me life

To even take the wood free from the contractor you will need to produce reams of paper work inc every licence under the sun, Planning permission, defra certs etc then if you are prepared to do that they will twig the wood is worth something and start trying to charge you for it. Been there done that just as easy to buy in cord wood.

Hats off to the OP for getting sorted at the right time.

It might not be as cheap as it once was, but given the 19% rise in gas prices yesterday, per kwh the firewood will be very good value.

Then again, the price I've paid for cord wood (hardwood) this year has gone up by 26%, fuel used yo run the chainsaw, telehandler and tractor to process it has gone up by 25% for petrol to 45% for red diesel. Bulk bags have gone up by 15%. Rendering the product costs up by almost 15%. Maybe firewood producers just dont have the balls or the sense of the energy utilities to pass on the true costs to the customers.

Baz i know where you are coming from with that one mate as everything else is going up. Going off the percentages that you have given if i was quoted 315 quid for a level load of mixed wood in a tranny tipper last year (December ) usually i will do 2 loads then this years prices at a conservative estimate would be 350 probably more ,thats 700 just for the winter months ,my combined gas/electric would come nowhere near that , OK i am just bouncing figures around ,but i reckon i would not be far off the mark .If wood suppliers do start to charge that price people will stop buying it and just switch the gas back on , i personally wouldn't want to do that but i am afraid my finances would not stretch far
