Wooow kinda getting a tiny bit offended here I haggle with my wood prices when buying but if you didn't ask silly prices I wouldn't and I don't spend £3 at a time on wood not worth putting my hand in my pocket

 

You dont count as you talk sense in the first place....

 

It's not worth getting your wallet out for I'd put and advert on eBay " free to collector "

 

Its the ones turning up from e bay that I would worry about.

Yeah that's true sold a quad on eBay and 4 young lads came to collect at night had really shifty eye in and out of everywhere they were so they soon get shooed off , nosey , thieving scum !

Not all woodturners are tyre kickers, so to speak . As firewood and cordwood is at a premium its harder to find a bargin for woodturning bits. Also people ask for stupid prices , so therefore they get a stupid response back.

 

So if no one local wants it split it for firewood as delivery or collection will also be a killer.

I agree with Ian you all have yards full of wood and us woodturners only want a few bits , and by the time we have sorted 4 or 5 bits out your asking £20 , where as we go to a craft fair and it's all dry and ready to turn for the same price

I have one great woodturning customer (a member here) who takes timber by the pallet load.

 

But my previous experience had been mostly negative.

 

You might struggle to move that elm on account of it being not especially interesting and quite small. Worth £20-40 to someone though.

not all turners are a waste of your time, i will agree some are.... this is the same with anything, motorsport, woodworking, cycling, rambling, arb workers......

you will always get some guys who like to chat about 1974, '83'... '96'....

live an let live, find people you like to deal with an crack on, simple really!!!

Although this elm is a bit on the small side it will make excellent bowls, turned on a pole lathe or hand carved. Fantastic grain and very durable

For something like that i would pay £20-£30 depending on how far i need to travel but to me its just a pile of wood with nothing done to it.

 

What makes me angry is when people add the word woodturning/carving in the description they think they can add an extra £100 or so to the price, when its me or other turners who turn it into something beautiful.

 

Rant over (rant not aimed at anyone here)
