I also find the comments regarding the sap interesting, as this has a relative called the varnish/laquer tree which has VERY serious side effects not dissimilar to those mentioned and making the skin sensitive to light for life afterwards.

 

I heard 1 case of three arbs getting 100k in compensation after serious injuries due to this species.

it would seem they are no longer classed as rhus, maybe genetic works have seperated them?

 

 

I cut a Varnish tree down a few years ago in Hemel Hempstead. At the time did'nt know it was one as on the ticket it was down as Acacia tree and i was new to Arb. On the journey back home noticed the skin on my arms start to bubble then a few hours later had black blisters all over my arms and chest. They got infected and had to go to hospital and put on stronge anti biotics. Had photos but can't find them on computer any more!

 

Should have made a claim! 100K!

Jesus pretty bad.. The one i did was a medium size and a straight fell. Got the sap on my arms from carrying the logs. Defiantly a tree too avoid!

Just googled varnish tree and this pic came up, the fruit on my tree was the same as in this photo.
