What metal detector?

I have recently hit a number of 6 inch nails and a rifle bullet right in the centre of some sycamore damaging my chain and so started to use a cheap detector but again I hit nails, finishing of the chain.

What metal detector is best for finding stuff deep in wood that is resonably priced?

Got myself a C Scope that was the dogs in the 1980s - important thing is that you can switch off the discrimination so you can pick up ferrous material otherwise it will be useless.

Mine cost £45 - a bargain in my eyes and works really well - found a few quid with it:thumbup:

The larger nails will be no problem to find but it may struggle with smaller stuff deeply embedded.

Re - the Garret unit mentioned earlier - they always had good rep in my younger days as an experienced user - found all sorts!

You could look on ebay - the old C scopes wit 6 - 8 knobs and VLF in their part code are the ones to go for - good value if they are working!

Thanks for the offer of the garrett ace 250 smith77 but abit out of my price range.

Would something like this be any good Standard Discriminating Metal Detector : Metal Detectors : Maplin ? or would i be better getting a better quality second hand one like spudulike recommends? Also anyone know what the relation between depth these detectors can detect in wood compared to soil?

Hi,

I second the Garrett super scanner wand, (check ebay for cheepies, shop soiled stock and ex demos etc), they are robust and very compact and a breeze to use. These will penetrate to a good depth so they pick up ingrown debris. A friend got an ex demo for £30.
