Its just the 6x6 with the rear bogie spread increased & idlers placed between the axels, prohibitly expensive when compared to the advantages of an off the shelf 8x8 truck without tracks shod with Xbib etc tyres

 

The transfer box instead if engaging/disengaging the front axel it disconnects the rear axels allowing it to run on the silly road frame in front wheel drive to save the massive expense of track ware on road.

 

I thought it was quite unimpressive when I see the video a few years ago. :001_tongue:

 

The trailer looks like an off road/oil exploration trailer.

in fairness though, there are advantages of the half track design-the tracks offer extreme traction, and stupidly low ground pressure for a vehicle that size far better than any 8x8 design, preventing the truck sinking (a stat i remember is the hagguland tracked vehicle has a ground pressure reading half that of the human footprint! puts in in perspective a bit better)

 

trailer may look daft, but i guess it saves the need of a low loader, whilst saving the expensive tracks unnessary wear n tear.

not a practical vehicle, but does what its been built for, nowt else really!

There is a good reason why half tracks died out in the 1950's.....they are shite.

 

Not as fast on road as wheeled vehicles and not as capable off road as tracked ones.All the hassels of tracked machines,without all the advantages.

 

Front wheel drive on road would be great untill you had to stop suddenly,or it got a bit icey.

 

As for having a Tracked on road designed Truck trying to do the job of a real off road dump truck?Well that would be great untill you got it stuck and the Dozer had knowhere to put the blade to push you out,or used the winchrope and ripped off your diffs.

 

Gimmick.

 

 

Actually, half tracks died out because the tracks were made from canvas or steel. With the advent of modern kevlar composite tracks, enabaling a treaded track to be used, I think you will see a resurgence in track technology.

 

That truck would be immensly usefull in agricultural industries, where its 40mph on road ability, terrain ability and multi body use would be a winner.

 

As for breaking in snow etc, (whilst on the dolly) I'm sure the dolly is breaked, and connects in the same way as a trailer. Anyhoo, the fronts would do 90% of the breaking.

 

Having run 8x8 forwarders etc, I still reckon the terrain ability on this thing is impressive. Certainly beats the 8x8 trucks Ive seen...

A better project would be to make a chipper out of a forage harvester like that one, the one in the vid is probably 500+ Hp.

 

 

A bloke up the road from my groundie made a chipper from a forage harvester about 15 years ago , all was well til he put the brushwood sweepings and a sledgehammer in the feed chute, bang, and it was all over.
