Panic fruits from a felled tree? see a lot of ground work there?

Don't know the sites history. but no other trees along the roadside.

I would think these are associated with the trees in the pictures.

Do mycorrhizal fungi panic fruit when there's lots of live symbiont root hosts around already?

David,

1. So would I, see Amanita rubescens and beech.

2. Not to my knowledge, but this would be hard to proof anyway. They can, however, once they've reached the end of their functioning effectively in the successive cycle of ectomycorrhizal symbionts, use their last fruiting season for producing as many FB's as possible.

I think, in this case A. muscaria will be connected to the root systems of several trees in different phases of their life cycles, so it will thrive and fruit for many more years to come. Besides, if the past and ongoing year has made it possible for the trees to produce and store lots of energy, it will be "willing" to share some of its wealth with its symbionts as well.

Really bad shots I'm afraid, only had the crackberry along. :001_rolleyes:

Having moved recently it was the boys first day at their new school today, so took the day off & trundled on home to be part of it all.

The school is changing from a two tier to a three tier school over the next year or so & they are planning some building works to accomodate the expansion.

With this in mind, I thought I'd have a look at some of the trees there, which might be affected by the works.

This fine Walnut had both I. hispidus & P. squamosus up on the trunk.

Both new tree/fungi specific associations for me.

Some Russula's in attendance associated with other trees on the site, (no shots)
