I,m on converting a pto powered winch to been hydraulic powered, so the winch will reverse, i would like some input on which hydraulic motor to use?

the winch will run off the tractor hydraulics, it has a reduction gear of 47/1 and one turn of the cable drum is 1 meter of cable when the drum is full and the winch is 6ton:001_smile:

Will it though?

Your hydraulic powered winch will have a pressure and flow requirement, your tractor will have a pressure and flow output depending on pump size, age, wear and tear etc.

What tractor do you want to run it off?

i have one question why!!! iam guessing its on a rachet brake system like on the fransgard which imo is a great system so why change it:001_smile:

you need to match the pto speed it should be run at, assuming its 540 rpm a 70cc motor at 38l/m (at 100% efficency)would give you 540 rpm

as hydraulics aren't 100% efficent i'd guess at about 75cc

you could talk to john at system h engineering he'd probally know www. hydradrive.co.uk

First off you need to work backwards from the wire rope to the motor.

e.g.

6000kg pull on the lowest rope layer vs. drum radius vs. torque unit length so you can calculate the required drum torque using lbft or NM etc.

Then divide that drum torque figure by 47 (gearing ratio) to give you the required torque, add >5% <10% to that figure for drive losses, you then end up with a torque figure the motor must output at or just before it stalls.

Once you have a torque figure for the motor you need to find one that dose that torque figure at stall when using 2600psig pressure and that 38LPM is within the working flow range.

2600psig @ 38LPM is only ~11.4FHP so whatever you make its not going to be very fast under full load even with your tractor at high rpm unlike how it would be if run via a more conventional PTO shaft method.

Also you may well need a motor with an internal brake if you do away with any ratchet etc

If you wanted a winch for a digger then be aware your average 4x4 hydraulic winch wouldn’t be strong enough in its structural design ratio.

Diggers even 1.5t will output more pressure & flow than a leyland 262, so would work better powering a hydraulic winch and would be quite fast as with a higher pressure you can use a smaller cc motor so you LPM make the motor turn faster when under no/part load, however if you got a winch second hand you would almost certainly have to put the correct pressure motor on it as most will be in the 135bar to 160bar range rather than in the >205bar <260bar range that digger are at.

If you do find a suitable hydraulic winch then old ditching buckets make good structure’s for housing winches in with the fairlead in the back of the bucket so it can be used at any height/angle and its easy enough to weld permanent spade lugs on the bucket base for high force pulls low down or if you need to do a high force pull from higher up with a smaller digger you can always cut the top part out of a tree to rest the bucket on. ;)
