Hi I am Robert Bishop ~ user name kraftinwood. I became a member in January and am a woodturner.

I have been turning for about 9 years now and specialize in large bowls and hollow forms using mainly native woods but also Australian & American burr.

When I began I started with a cheap import lathe and upgraded it twice before buying a VB36 lathe which can turn anything that can be mechanically hoisted on to it hence my 1 ton lifting crane and cutting tools 2 metres long !!.

People often ask how they get started in wood turning, it takes a good many years to reach a standard where your work is good enough to become a professional woodturner.

Do not let that put you off, enjoy your turning, most new turners will after a relatively short while be giving all their friends and relatives a bowl each for Christmas and Birthdays !!.

To move on from that stage though and become proficient you must practise, practise & practise as its the only way to improve and be able to consistently produce Gallery quality work to an international competition standard.

If you want to start woodturning as a hobby then you are best advised to seek some tuition to start with, there are many professional turners who will give lessons for a reasonable cost. You dont even have to buy any basic equipment that way but you probaly soon will once you've had a few lessons and get the bug.

You guys also have a big advantage and that is access to the pick of timber that you cut down. Its true that wood takes a long time to properly dry especially air drying but that is all part of the learning process.

Have fun and enjoy some turning.
