Thanks gerrit, I did suspect as much (with tony's help)

 

Pete, if you look at the pictures (i think it's the last one on oak 2) you can just make out near where the soil meets the base of the trunk a "sinkage" or dip in the bark on the right.

 

Possible suspects are what gerrit has stated

Will do, should of got better pics really, these butts where massive for the size of the trees and one of the smaller ones had a more pronounced bottle effect at the base, but as stated I was in a rush:sad:

Shear cracks tend to follow a fairly clean line and go from root crown up, and inbetween major roots as apposed to splitting a root through the centre longtitudinal. when a shear bomb goes past the neutral fibre zone it is dangerous, also a seperation shear crack where a shear crack seperates a portion of the root system or a major root from the rest of the tree is also highly dangerous.

 

I would suggest these are dessication or growth crack, and that the tree will not be effected by them, but thats an opinion based on photos and therefore flawed.

 

NOONE bar the man who was stood at the tree has the full story and ability to determine the reality.
