probably too late to bid but this one looks cool

2001 SUZUKI JIMNY JLX BLACK on eBay (end time 13-Feb-11 13:08:47 GMT)

That's same engine as ours - only problems on that age seem to be at around 70,000 miles the crank pulley starts to delaminate and throws belts (£150 and and hours job) and the crank and/or cam sensors can play up a bit - £150 ish and 30 min job to swap

Thanks for all the advice. I have had Land Rovers before (SWB 2A and 101GS) but wore them out and fuel/mileage bad even on the new versions.

The SJ demo was fun. The man had not told me it was an automatic and brand new so no dirt driving:001_huh: as he had sold it to someone.

Good turning circle and seats with decent headroom. Low noise inside.

I have heard there is a new Fiat Panda 4x4 due soon and the new VW Caddy van is now available as a 4 Motion with axle diff lock.

depends what you mean by "work vehicle"...

if you want it just to get you and a chainsaw to site, a Jimny or similar sized vehicle would be ideal I would have thought.

However, if you are ever going to want to carry/tow anything worth speaking of I would have thought a step up to the Landy would be in order. Don't know what the new ones are like, but in October I brought a G reg 110 pickup with a 200tdi engine in it for about 2k - so far, the only problem has been the headlights relay switch, which hardly broke the bank to replace! And I'm getting about 35mpg so not too thirsty either.

Something that does good MPG like the clio diesel we have at present and costs little to tax/insure. Is able to take basic work tools including chainsaws and animal feed to sites but does not need pushing out of fields with lots of revs.

We have a main large 10 ton vehicle with diff locks but need something small between sites.

To get clio diesel like MPG, I'd say you'll struggle to find any 4wd that will get near it in reality. Can't you look at some decent open (ish) centre tyres on a diesel van? There's some speed rated nobblies (look like a rally tyre) that you can get in normal sizes as a mate of mine has them on his VW T4 and it's surprising where that will go now

Clio has as new M+S tyres with a good tread but being front wheel drive the more weight the less traction:001_rolleyes:

2x2 will never go where a 4x4 will:lol:

I plan to do some more research.

There is a new SJ version due out soon. Unsure on same petrol engine. I was thinking about using LPG as that fuel is CHEAP here.

In some EU countries a tipping version with canvas tilt now available.

The 1.3 diesel 4x4 Panda does 88MPG but no "van" version.
