It was invented in the 18th century by Hoppus. It allows the seller and the buyer to both take a bit of a hit on the price. If you imagine looking at the end of the log, and drawing an imaginary square over it, the corners of the square would be outside the circle, and the four sides would be inside the circle. the measurement is the mid quarter girth squared, multiplied by the length of the log in feet, divided by 144. Therefore you measure the girth of the log halfway down its length, divide by four, square that figure, multiply by the logs length (in feet) and divide by 144.

Therefore if your log is 2'6" diameter at the mid point, and 7' long, there would be just shy of 27 cubic foot in it. If you deliver it and its of high quality, you may get 5 or 6 quid a foot

get the radius in feet, square it, then times by 3.14, times this figure by the length in feet. this gives u the cubic feet of the log. divide this figure by 1.2 to give hoppus. Will not be exact but close

Volume of a cylinder divided by 1.2 isnt really nearly accurate enough TBH.
