We have used the cheap ones for competition for three years and they are ok, the only drawback is they do not have auto switch off, you have to remember to do it manually which is ok if you have a good memory. I now keep a spare battery in the truck so that tells you a little about what happens from time to time. They can be a bit fiddly if your wearing gloves

A LODAR is around £190 but obviously a much more robust bit of kit with a longer range.

I use both supplied by this guy Superwinch Parts, Electric Winches and Winch Bumpers, UK – Goodwinch.com.

Ive got the warn remote for my m8000, it fits, it works and its never failed. Best to buy one thats compatible with the make. does make life easier, have even used it in the tree once!!!! Didnt trust the groundie with a 4 tonne winch and a back leaning stem!!!!

So guys..... if you had mislaid the cabled trigger from a WARN 9000i how would you go about getting it going again. I got quoted £125 for a new warn one which seems a bit steep. What would you do?

I have a spare spurious controller a bit like this, that can be hard wired in or you can go for the twenty quid Chinese remote, or belt and braces go for both.

Mine currently has a hard wired wander lead that lives under the bonnet

WANDER LEAD - RECOVERY, WINCH, TAIL-LIFT, IVECO, FORD. on eBay (end time 31-Jan-11 21:33:55 GMT)

If the remote is elsewhere and you are stuck, I have used a paper clip to short the wires.

It's quite easy to wire a permanant switch and still have the remote as well.

We have a switch in the cab, a switch by the winch and a remote. We do away with the solonids and use Albrights which are more reliable.

Just a quick update - the advice in this thread was (as usual) top notch! I got two (one for a spare) remote control units sent from China via ebay. Cost £30.83 - fitted within the hour of arrival and works a treat.

I still haven't found the proper lead so it was just as well I asked.
