bio hydraulic oil

hello all, does anyone know of a decent bio-hydraulic oil (iso 32) thats reasonably priced? It'd be for use with a firewood processor that needs regular topping up (chainsaw lubricated from hydraulic oil tank) hence my interest in the price! Thanks, Rob S

I think thats a different grade (46 rather than 32) from what is specified for the processor, the only bio 32 hydraulic oil i've found on the internet has been really expensive. Only got the machine recently so modifying it (as suggested above) is beyond my ability.

When I worked in the oil industry around 10 years ago biodegradable oils were all based on synthetic esters as base oil. These are generally around 5 times the price of crude derived base oils. The main thing to look for with these oils in hydraulic systems is their aggressive nature towards rubber hoses and seals so a simple oil change may give you leaks after a short time. You should be able to check compatibility with the equipment manufacturer.

What about any of the panolin range of oils? All our excavators at work and plant to work anywhere near water runs the stuff and to my recollection there are several formulations so one might suit your application

Have seen a few people do this - think it varies a bit on different machines but is meant to be fairly simple to do. Mate of mine used to have a tank drip feedign the chain with plain old veg oil with no probs.
