  1. Thanks for the offer, i'm still working there. If i'm really stuck i'll give you a shout.
  2. dont think its had more than 2, the bar has lost most of its paint but the current chain still had some use left in it.
  3. No, its a new saw bought the beginning of this year and only had moderate use. Guess i'll get a new rim when I replace the chain and see if that makes a difference.
  4. Thanks for the replies, its a problem i've not had before in 15 odd years of regular use so a bit mystified..
  5. not an issue with the number of links, fits fine when chain is fresh then gradually loosens with use as ive said. Im just trying to figure out why so I can fix it.
  6. Yes, it starts out part way along its travel then gradually moves to the end as it gets looser. I obviously realize it shouldnt be doing this. Currently running standard stihl 14" guidebar with matching chain. In the time its taken to wear the chain halfway through its life its loosened to the point it cant be properly tightened on the bar its intended for (if that makes sense).
  7. Thanks, in this instance its gradually getting looser but not shrinking again when it cools down. Becomes a problem when the chain tensioner is at the end of its travel.
  8. Thanks for the replies, this is a newish saw so doesnt have problems associated with early 261. I dress the bar regularly and make sure the oil hole is clear. What would I be checking the drive sprocket for? (its not that old) I'll investigate further, quite hard to ignore when the chain has been fully tensioned and still hangs off the saw.
  9. hello all, i've recently had a problem with chains gradually expanding to the point that they are too loose for the bar (generally before the chain is worn out so pretty annoying) on my stihl 261 chainsaw. I'd been using plantoil bar oil with all my saws for at least 10 years without problems but have recently switched to stihl/husqvarna bio oil due to the price shooting up. I'm guessing its a problem relating to lack of oil but dont really understand it as i've never had this problem before. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks,Rob S
  10. Thanks for the replies, hopefully pointed me in the right direction..
  11. hello all, as described in the title i've been having trouble with my stihl 241 chainsaw. It runs fine until I put the chainbrake on then cuts out and wont start again. This is a nuisance as I want to be able to use the chainbrake when i'm moving around without this happening. Anyone got any ideas what could be causing this and how to fix it? Thanks, Rob S
  12. hello all, chainsaw milled several oak butts last winter with the intention of turning the resulting slabs into garden benches. Looking through them I can see many of them have small woodworm-type holes mostly in the sapwood but some in the heartwood also. Can anyone offer any tips on the best way to deal with this? I've been trimming off the sapwood but do I need to treat any remaining affected areas or is it not much of an issue and unlikely to spread. Thanks, Rob S
  13. Hello all, as above i've worn out the plug cutter I use for cutting oak plugs for bench-making and cant find anywhere that sells them. Does anyone know where I could source one? The one i've been using was in a boxed set and I dont need a whole new box..Thanks, Rob S
  14. Thanks for the replies, guess I need to check it over..
  15. hello all, was doing some milling earlier this week with my stihl 660 chainsaw. Was running ok until the afternoon when it wouldnt start (like it had flooded), tried taking plug out and drying it etc. but still wouldnt start so packed up. Went out the next day and the same thing happened (ran alright in the morning then wouldnt start). Took it out a couple of days later and it fires on full choke then nothing on half-choke. Any ideas what the problem could be? Thanks, Rob S
  16. yep, looks like I need to order some parts..
  17. Thanks for the replies.I also sometimes use fuel to clean up the tank but in this case it'd be gushing out of the bottom of the saw so i'll give it a miss..I ran the saw with the clutch removed and could see there was nothing leaking from the oil pump or that side of the saw but oil was gushing out from underneath somewhere between the oil tank and the oil pump. The problem is I cant see exactly where and I dont want to start replacing the wrong parts..
  18. hello all, my stihl ms 660 has recently started leaking chain oil (shortly after a couple of days milling oak). I've removed the clutch to look at the oil pump etc. and can see no oil leaking from there when I run it but oil is pouring out from underneath the chainsaw. Took the oil hose and pickup out and its covered in chain oil but has no visible cracks. Was wondering if anyone had any ideas what the problem might be and if theres anything else I should check? Thanks, Rob S
  19. Ok, I was using a combi-spanner to turn it. Was putting plenty of pressure on it but wasn't turning any further (felt like something would break if I forced it any more).
  20. hello all, my stihl 660 chainsaw started leaking oil from somewhere behind the clutch the other week so I wanted to take a look. I looked in the workshop manual at how to remove the clutch and bought the plastic tool it tells me needs to go in the spark plug hole. I've tried unscrewing the clutch clockwise as it says but it just locks up after half a turn or so due to the tool in the spark plug hole. Does anyone have any idea what i'm doing wrong/how I should be doing it? Thanks, Rob S
  21. Had a mostly good year on the veg plot this year and have nets full of onions&potatoes which should last through the winter. Its been a good year for apples as well so I bought a cheap cider press and have started pulping&pressing the apples into juice to ferment into cider. Should be ready to drink for winter solstice/xmas/new year. Happy days.
  22. Thats what I found when I looked into it as well...
  23. hello all, my farmi wp30 firewood processor has recently started leaking hydraulic fluid from the connector between the motor for the conveyor and the plastic pipe that runs to it. I've replaced the connector with a new part but its still leaking. Was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and been able to fix it? Thanks, Rob S
