not completely sure of the downy terminal buds and without seeing other buds I can't be 100% sure (have I said enough in case I'm wrong?) but could it be Cercidiphyllum japonicum? (Katsura tree) the two buds close together are indicative but seeing the opposite buds in the photo would help ID for certain

definately not a katsura, winter buds on a katsura are a definate red colour

Looks like you guys are getting closer. I've just unpacked my winter tree I'd book. Looks like its some kind of Japanese maple. Which would explain the slow growth, and the lack of terminal bud.

I'm on my phone at the no so couldn't upload to forum. Please see link

you may have hit the nail on the head with that one!

 Do I get a gold star, Sir?

I've never take much notice of the twigs and buds as the bark and form is so distinctive on the Parrotias. If, er, that's what it is...

I bet you actually know what it is and you're just teasing us, aren't you?

My (educated, of course!) guess would be Persion Ironwood - Parrotia persica.

Ha, no I genuinely don't know, after finding a similar shot in a winter tree id book, (see link in my previous posts), I'm sure it's some fancy maple. After all there army many trees that are opposite and arnt acers, there are a few woody shrubs but this had tree like charachertistics that no woody shrub would.

I guess I'm just looking for an average here but it looks like in the only one the thinks its Japanese maple. I really don't think it's persica. Iron wood is not opposite and the buds are bigger and I'm not aware that it has a downy section on most recent years growth.
