Black or Hybrid ?

At a request from a local artist, I have been on the hunt for any Populus nigra ( Black poplar.)

 

On a tip off from a colleague, I had a look at a couple of local trees today.

Seeing them on the side of the highway makes me siddle away from them being nigra's, so my guess is that these are Poplus x canadensis (Hybrid Black poplars)

 

Thought I had a shot of the tree in situe, but must of deleted it.

Tree is appox 18-20m, but having been pollarded (sic)

and looks to be on a 5-7 year cycle.

3rd underside.

Btw, the leafstalk is very flat.

 

Have tried the usual suspects, Mitchell, Dorling Kindersley et al., and I'm none the wiser.

Any thoughts fellas ?

 

Also, anyone know of any Black Pops in London.

I have the BSBI handbook of willows and poplars in front of me, and the leaf looks more like the hybrid to me.

Both nigra and x canadensis have the flat petioles, although nigra's are slightly shorter, 3-7 cm as opposed to 4-10 cm. nigra has no glands or swellings at the junction of petiole and lamina, x canadensis usually has one or two glands.

I have a black poplar here but no help to you. I have got a book by fiona cooper on black poplar,here are two to be going on with grafton lock north of the river thames 3 female bkack poplar grid ref 42681998.chingford epping forest 1 male black poplar 53981943 i have a list but not sure which ones are in london.

There is a row of 16 male and 22 female black poplar on the south bank of the thames between Hammersmith and putney bridges,i hope this is helping david:001_smile:

Anything nearer North London Dave?

 

Vespa's in the body shop at the moment due to ending up on the deck twice within 24hrs last week.
