I agree about the action- a normal splitter is enough of a pain when it twists to one side every now and then, let alone a splitter that twists every time you use it. I also like the way it's filmed against a backdrop of a good few tonsworth of bagged birch logs.

On a related note, does anyone know if these are any good?

Wood Splitters - Super Spear Wood Splitters

I've got a 10 ton hydraulic behind the tractor for firewood, but was thinking about one or two for cleaving ash and oak for gates and railings.

I should imagine that the spear splitter is very time consuming compared to an axe? I haven't used one though, so can only speculate.

I agree, don't think I'd ever use one for splitting logs, but with cleaving you normally use sledge and wedges cutting along the length of the grain. Might be quicker than that.

If your thinking about the size of wood that Im thinking about wouldn't a froe be better?

Sam

I've tried a froe but not had a great deal of luck with it. Maybe I should just invest in a froe and practice. I'm always scared to practice in case I ruin two potentially usable lengths.
