I'm having the injections at the mo, had one on the 29th May took about 2 weeks to kick in. The previous one kicked in stright away.

They help for sure i fell 21 again (but its not a cure).

The only problem i see with the injections is it just masks the pain, so you can damage yourself without any warning signals.

I'm going for a second opinon as its a major op and they can't put it back if you don't like it.

If your in a lot of pain you ought to get an injection so it gives you time to get your head round it.

Dont let your back affect your diving, put your gear on in the water.

At the moment I am on a series of tablets that help sleep at night etc....

Are you still climbing like me? or are you able to take it easier?

Has anyone mentiones incapacity benefit dare I say it (as I can't think of anything worse).

Do you know any others who have had the op and carried on working in the industry for many years later?

 

I know I have a lot of questions but it is encouraging to know that I'm not the only one.

 

I won't let it affect my diving,off to northern spain this week, if I couldn't dive I would be even more depressed!!

I'm not a climber, I'm an arb and machinery dealer.(but i do test all new stuff so i can answer any questions with some kind of idea of what its about).

 

I don't seem to get the time to take it easy as we are getting busier & busier at the moment and i need more staff if anyones interested. September should be fun I've got 2 shops and 1 workshop to run whilst I'm out in the road doing 4 maybe 5 shows, oh the joys of running your own business.

 

I know of a few people who have had the op and it all went fine, movement is restricted a little but then i haven't moved that well for years anyway.

Hi Justin,

I just came back from the specialist today who gave me the option of the operation to fuse the three lower vertibrae or to have the injections and then physio. Have you had the injections? did they help? or have you just run out of options?

I am interested and frightened about my own back especially after reading previous threads and comments.

My specialist in Bishops Stortford said if I had the op it would give extra wear and tear to the rest of the vertibrae, any comments?

With me the injections worked for a while, everyones different. I would try injections first and physio and try and leave op as last resort. The physio said to me if my back is going to go again it will be above or below the scar. Same with my shoulder a consultant said op, then i spoke to another one and he said i'll give you steroid injections to see how it goes because op should be a last resort, it could make it worse. Hope this help it's a hard descion.

sorry to hear of your back problems. I am by no mean an expert on these matters - but a close friend of mine suffered on and off with similar complaints for about 3 years and in the end was advised that an operation was the best option. He saw osteopaths, chiropractors the works, they all came to the same conclusion. He stopped the meds and stated doing pilates exercises to help build core strength and did some chi-gung exercises. At the moment he doesnt have problems with the back and we even had a couple of days snowboarding in Norway last year. Just wondered if any of you have explored this?

Tried pilates last year but was not in the right frame of mind at the time might give it another go, the wife and her mates do it every Wednesday in our house maybe they will let me join in.

i think with these forms of treatment, like chi-ung and other chinese methods it helps to believe. but sometimes harder to find the time.

I have heard that Pilates is very good and also find it hard to find the time. I was going to get the Wii fit board which gets you to do the same movements and strenghens the core muscles, but they are sold out at the moment.
