Ganoderma resinaceum defo, Armillaria? or could be Collybia fusipes more common on Oak

mmmm, o.k i thought colybia and ruled it out in 3 seconds due to immense size of clump, then it could have been a gone over (the black clump) grifola, but grifola isnt umbonate, but that made me think mmm polyporus umbelatus, but then stiped and preceeding shot, all indicating armillaria, which for the record is just as common on oak as colybia!:001_tt2:

Many thanks; and you have proved what a fantastic resource this site is! The tree is coming down, wanted to know if there was going to be any chance of useable timber, or firewood the lot. Thanks again.

depending on the variety of Oak, there should be timber to be had, as resi certainly in robur decays at the roots and sapwood layer first, and as for mellea or colybia they are both sap wood decayers, though armillaria does have a butt rot mode acting as a sapro on old tap roots and heart wood if the tree can contain its spread.

so yes, there should be good timber in it, as long as there is no coelessence from the pruning wounds above!:001_cool:

if the timbers any good with those knotty bits it should make pretty timber, if you cut low to get maximum timber just notch out the stump a bit to retain the ropes for attaching to butt, should be an easy fell once the tops off and down to a timber length.

Having the rope attached to the butt is the key
