marlow gecko splice

I have tried splicing this using a 16 strand eye splice, (from the samson site) I have found it impossible to pass the tapered end past the section which still contains the core. I am using a wire fid.

Is there another splice that I can use with this rope?:001_smile:

i think its a standard/set splice for 16 strand rope i had a go a while back and found it pretty tough going particuly on old rope, there was a member on here called "jamie" who helped me a lot:thumbup1: so maybe he could help you, i gave up when i entered the dreaded loler, ce mark senario!!

good luck with it.

As john said, Marlow Gecko is not easy, especially if it's been used, I couldn't even get the core out of the one I tried, as you have managed this you are doing well. You could try tapering the cover more and the other trick you could try is cutting out half of the strands half an inch from the end then use the remaining long strands to fold over the short strands as they go through the wire fid, bunch up the cover before you pull through that should give you more room also pull the core at the same time as your pulling the fid through, take your time and wear some gloves. Oh and make sure the fid has not caught a core strand, pull the core tight as you enter the fid, you need to try to get it between the cover and the core not through the core.

hi Tom i'm up in Oban just now, insert a 'welding wire' wire fid (or one of nods ones) in at mark d and out at mark c, take the end of the taper and reduce some of the strands down then attach the loops of the wire fid to something heavy and pull the splice through. thats my best advice. cheers

if you,re still having problems give us a shout (after 5pm as i'm working nights). my number should be on the cv i sent.
