I use the 421. working on your jack, a log deck is essential IMO.

the 421 will just about hold enough lengths to make 2.5m3 of split wood i.e. a good transit load.

as steve has said they are grossly overpriced for what they are.

with hindsight I would make one myself (or get someone to fabricate it for me).

i think the most important thing is to make it big enough to take enough lengths, in one hit, to make around 10M3 of split wood. this avoids the stop start of load-split-load-split.

if the deck is gravity fed the max capacity is probably about 5m3, with a chain type feed the capacity could be higher

Having researched purchasing a wood processor last September I found out that Hakki Pilke, Japa and Palax are owned by the same Finnish holding company.

I notice in a link in another thread to the Fuelwood website that they also offer log tables.

(I think that I see what Hakki Pilke call a Woodner drum in the brochure also.)

Fuelwood also list a 2004 basic log table for £375 which costs £975 new. It might be a good place to start!

I was going to build a simple deck with a slope and a few of those rollers they use on boat trailers. I am hoping with a couple of long hookeroons we wont need too much in the way of hydraulics.

gravity fed is fine but you will need hydraulic operated paddle to control the roll of logs off the deck and onto the infeed conveyor. you need one small ram to operate that presumably you could feed it of the tractor hydraulics. Let me know if you want some pics of the paddle design and ram arrangement.

For bigger and twisty timber two hydraulic rollers would also be nearly essential.
