Bats AND there habitats are protected by LAW (see section 8):001_cool:

Only if its identified as a active roost or is deamed to be potentially used roost. Yes it could be look at as you do but all my bat surveys i've had done say 'it could be used by bats but there were no signs of used habitat by bats' In all fairness every dead tree must be protected the especially if it has ivy or flaking bark.

how would you manage this tree in the high traffic footpath scenario Hama?

To make it more difficult, the footpath cannot be moved out of target range.

... and there are CONFIRMED bats

If it needs to be removed then you would need to go to the EU directive people and get a form, fill it in then they decide, to remove the hazardous tree.

If we are going to do any work on a tree with a cavity no matter how big or small. We get a little endoscopy camera to check for bats. If there are bats in there we leave the tree to its own devices and put a nice little post and rail fence about 5 metres out from the crown base incase of falling branches.

I like the fence idea, I also saw a sign in another thread that said something like "I am an old tree, please enjoy me from a safe distance"
