The SC in the picture has quite a few side branches low down, which will make it a bit more difficult to split for palings. When it's been coppiced there will be a lot of new growth, more competition and better wood next time.

 

Kindling is a good idea, SC lights easily and burns hot. As a firewood it spits badly but leaves very little ash.

 

You'll be amazed how quickly it grows back, so you could have the thin rods for yurt makers in just a few years.

In Sweden for example, nearly every farm has forestry as welll as ag. Probably because the ground is frozen for the whole winter. My farm is a bog so although I have timber, I just cant get there

 

One advantage of charcoal burning, only 1/5th the weight to extract.
