GoPro HD Vs X170 Cameras

So the guys at GoPro have been very good and given me this little baby.

(with a vast amount of blagging required)

So as i already own the X170 i thought id give a little bit of a review on them.

The x170 (£129.98) isn't hd but there is a model on the market the HD170 (£329.99) They both have a lcd replay screen and remote which the GoPro (£299.95) doesn't. They all can take photos although the HD170 and GoPro can do burst modes of 3 shots over 6 seconds. The Hd170 can also do timelapse set to shoot at preset times, 5,10,15 etc whilst the GoPro has a count down timer for a single shot portrait.

filming and battery life.

X170 well the battery life isn't the best and for this test i used rechargable batteries which can be charged off a computer via the usb and pressed Rec we got 45mins without using the energy saver mode and 1.25hrs with. Filming is not HD but gives a good quality and has a field of vision of 170 degrees. The lens can be rotated to allow level filming. This camera seems to struggle when filming in the cold tho as we found out at the Apf this year.

GoPro will film in HD for 2.30hrs and has a built in heating battery system which comprises of a rechargable battery charged to full in a hour and a bit. The feild of vision is the same as the x170 although when using this on a humid day can cause the waterproof case to steam up. To avoid this just change the back to the vented non underwater back. This can film at a rate of 30-60fps depending on the program setting. For the test i filmed in non HD to keep it even.

Quality of film i think the GoPro has the edge it seems to be able to adapt to light change much quicker than the X170.

Having an lcd screen is very, very usefull as you can check camera positioning and replay footage instantly.

Remote is great but the buttons are very easy to find on the GoPro.

Securing the camera

The GoPro comes with lots of different mounts including 2 types of hemet mounts which are fully removable a number of stick on clips and some sort of arm extension for side of the hat placement. These are secured via a verston clip or tightning nut. All have full tilt angle adjustments.

X170 velcro tape to the hat and a strong-ish Clip which i taped up for extra safety and added some throwline to secure it through a vent on the hat as i lost it once. When you've placed it you can't just move it a bit.

Weather usage

GoPro fully waterproof thanks to the housing and pretty bombproof as all the motoX guys are using them.

X170 and HD170 short term waterproof of a depth of 0.5m for less than 5 minutes according to a couple of online reviews but not mentioned on the drift site.

So the scores

X170

Ease of use 10/10

Waterproof 5/10

Film Quality 7/10

Securing 7/10

Battery life 4/10

Cost 8/10

Total 41/60

GoPro

Ease of use 6/10

Waterproof 10/10

Film Quality 9/10

Securing 10/10

Battery life 8/10

Cost 5/10

Total 48/60

Note: I have no connection with any of the companies and this is my own opinion of these two products.

ian, which one will work in sub zero temperatures the best?

it seems other than battery life and waterproofness, the drift is the better choice?

do you have a video of the gopro's quality you could stick on here?

thanks for the review

I "may" be able to sort a group buy on Go-pro's if enough people are interested..
